My search for lactose free ice cream in Munich
Being told to go lactose free a week before gelato season started in Munich was quite a blow. It has been a real struggle to walk around Munich this summer seeing so many people enjoy the delicious gelato that is just beyond my body's reach. I know what you're thinking, sorbet is lactose free! But you know what? I don't like sorbet very much. It's fine when there's nothing else but it's not even close to the unparalleled mint chocolate chip. All I crave is sweet, creamy, delicious, non-fruit ice cream! Is it possible that there are high histamine ingredients in lactose free ice cream? Yes! But I'm tackling one thing at a time.
With my ice cream desires beyond my control, I have begun an epic hunt to quench my thirst. Today's post is inspired by the truly delicious vegan chocolate ice cream "schoko nero" at Eismeer in the Glockenbach neighborhood of Munich. Vegan you say? Yes, vegan! That is the guaranteed lactose free path to ice cream. Schoko nero was so creamy, so satisfying with a chocolate flavor so intense that I'm glad I only ordered one scoop. I don't think I could have handled two. I will definitely revisit another day, especially with it being only a 15 minute bike ride from my apartment.
A few weeks prior to this incredible discovery, I paid a visit to Ice Date in Schwabing. Billed as being a vegan, bio, and sugar free ice cream shop, Ice Date certainly got my attention. The sweetness of the ice cream comes from dried dates, hence the name. I ordered two scoops -- chocolate and hazelnut. At first bite I could see the appeal. However, the more I ate, the worse it got. I started to notice that the grainy texture of the scoops was becoming my main focus and, shockingly, I threw it away before I was finished! I don't think I've ever done that before. I will not be returning.
My newest lactose free ice cream success happened in Schwabing near tram station Kurfürstenplatz. There is a gelato place there called Venezia and they have a really dark, rich lactose free chocolate gelato that you only need one scoop of to be satisfied. And, bonus, it's only 1 euro!
I have visited two other gelato shops with non-fruit vegan flavors that need reviewing. However, I can't remember what either is called. I shall return with more information.
